There’s no denying it when your coffee table is stacked high with the evidence. From US Weekly and People to Star and In Touch, we’re glued to the latest news of Brangelina and TomKat, Simpsons vs. Lacheys. Who’s breaking up and who’s breaking down! Whether we’re willing to admit it or not, there is something riveting (albeit silly) about celebrity worship whether it be a photo of Sarah Jessica Parker taking out the trash or Britney Spears in the drive through at McDonalds.
And with March rearing its pretty head, we’re just days away from the Academy Awards where everyone from Joan Rivers to Bobbie Thomas to our overly friendly UPS guy is eagerly awaiting the red carpet event of the year. In fact, our celeb-obsession is clocking in at record highs as we countdown to find out if the hunky cowboys will grab an Oscar, which starlet will wear the most regrettable gown, and who will walk away from the evening stealing the runway because Oscar fashion coordinator Patty Fox confirmed, "Inside the theater the evening is all about film. But on the red carpet it's the look that counts."
The genius of the Oscars is that while the stars are pulling couture over their perfectly Pilate sculpted frames, we’ve got an equally prime front row seat as we pull on our best and settle down on the couch with our friends with bowls of popcorn. Could it get anymore glamorous?
Leading up to the event, we’ll flip through and chat about page after glossy page of celebs walking Burberry-clad dogs…celebs pushing grocery carts…celebs pretending they eat. In fact, our favorite magazines tell us “Stars - they’re just like us!” and boy do we want to believe them. The dream sequence fades in and we picture ourselves cruising Rodeo Drive, backseat filled with Fendi and Roberto Cavalli, shiny hair extensions blowing in the wind. Then a ringing phone snaps us back to reality – spreadsheets and Snickers wrappers.
But perhaps we should consider this: if even the perpetually-flawless Reese Witherspoon can make a boo-boo and find herself wearing Kirsten Dunst’s Chanel hand-me-downs, maybe sometimes celebrities are just like us. And if they’re just like us, doesn’t it follow that just maybe sometimes we’re just like them?
Afterall, one could argue that when we put on our oversized sunglasses and walk with a little extra swing in our step, we’re as glamorous and E!-worthy as the biggest star, or at least we feel like it. Be it that big date, important company dinner, or high school reunion, there are those special “I’d like to thank the academy” events that bring out our true inner star. Paparazzi may not be camped outside our front door and we may not be on a first name basis with Oscar de la Renta, but we should treat all our big events with the same importance and indulge in every moment. Carpe-Diem or “Seize the Day” (and Night) and treat yourself to some posh pampering – whether it be “beauty boosters” like that pedicure you’ve been wanting, some new bling-bling from Alex Woo, or an all out dream vacation, go ahead and celebrate celebrities, but don’t forget to celebrate your fabulous self.
Roll out your own red carpet from time to time and dress up in something so magnificent even Cojo would shed a tear. You don't need any explanation or rationalization, the celebrity is in all of us. Because when it comes to glamour and style, you too can be a fashion inspiration. Most important, don’t forget to smile.
