Fashion Wire Daily - Alex Woo's Strong & Sexy Fall

NY August 19, 2002 Alex Woo is becoming well known for her modern take on accessories. Using 18 karat yellow gold or matte-finished sterling silver with semi precious stones, the powerful pieces pack punch but without compromising femininity.

Her fall 2002 collection is inspired by simply that: fall. She has chosen smoky and lemon quartz as well as rutilated quartz, which is becoming popular with many of the high-end jewelers.

"The rutilated quartz has strands inside, often in yellow and orange, which makes it a perfect fall stone. I used it in a 'Venus' necklace, which is a pendant that can be flipped into a ring. Rutilated quartz is often referred to as 'Venus's Hair' because it has a strand-like appearance," Alex said.

The strong and sexy gems are perfectly played in sturdy settings. The 'Aspen' line boasts leaf shaped pendants with heavy chains and a solid silver link leaf necklace and bracelet. "I like to use a heavier chain for fall as I feel the more delicate chains get lost in fall clothing. The pieces should stand out."

For some evening glamour the 'Samara' line is sure to be a hit. The star shaped drops are double linked into a choker, necklace, bracelet and stud earrings. The stars are brushed in the center and have a light sheen to the riveted edges making them subtly sparkle, perfect for a night on the town.

Alex has also designed a rose gold ring in memory of her mother. "At the age of 16 my mother passed away from breast cancer. I designed this symbol of remembrance for her as a way to help fight the disease. The design is inspired from the pink ribbons that symbolize the cause." All proceeds from the ring will go to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
